Samson, Delilah, Chester, and Sabrina

We have four cats that came from the shelter. We got Samson and Delilah as 8-week old kittens in June of 1999, when our old cat, Rossi, was beginning to get feeble and didn't appreciate the amount of attention that our children, then six and three, wanted to give to a cat. The kittens were fine decoys. Samson, whose shelter name was Samson, was the runt of his litter and was sick for a while after we got him, but he is now a fine, big healthy cat who still thinks he can climb drapes like he did when he was smaller. Delilah, whose shelter name was Teri, is most agreeable with people. She will allow herself to be petted, carried around, and even dressed up the children. She is not so tolerant with other animals, however, and she eventually had to go live in the garage, where she is the queen of all she surveys.

One day when we were visiting the shelter, we petted a small black and white cat that absolutely stole our hearts away. We didn't need another cat, but we brought him home anyway. He was six to nine months old and had been living at the shelter for a number of months. His shelter name was Wylie, but we named him Chester. He is a curious and mischievous guy who has a very loud purr and loves to snuggle up against our necks or our chests.

A year after we got Chester, we were again unable to leave without a cat. We had no more room and certainly no more need for another cat, but we saw Sabrina. She looked very much like Rossi, who had died by this time, and we thought she was extremely beautiful and very friendly. Her shelter name was Sassy and she was already nine months old, so we wanted to give her an "S" name to help her associate the word with herself. She certainly knows her name, now, so it must have worked.
