Huey

Huey (a.k.a. Mac)

Approximately 3 1/2 years ago, I had to have one of my two dogs put to sleep. I had a year-old Bassett that was used to having a big brother, and she was pretty lost. I saw an ad in the Mount Vernon News for a dog that was very friendly with people and other dogs named Mac. I brought Tricie (my Bassett) in to meet Mac and see if he was someone she might get along with. Things went very well at the Humane Society. Mac was larger than she was, but very friendly (as advertised). Mac was listed as an Australian Shepherd mix. I took Mac home and renamed him Huey.

I was told at the Humane Society that Huey had been adopted before and brought back because when the owner went to work Huey got bored and ate the carpet. I had a 4-foot chain link fence around my back yard, a dog door so the dogs could run in and out, and of course, Tricie to play with. My thought was that maybe Huey would not get bored. This part worked out very well for a while. However, I have always taken my dogs for walks on flexi leads. When I started to walk Huey I thought he would pull my arm off. After a week of walks and Huey pulling, he pulled my back out. I was beginning to think I would have to take him back to the Humane Society. This was the last thing I wanted to do, as he was a wonderful dog in every other way. Tricie loved him and they played together all the time. After I put a choke collar on Huey and he came to realize he was going to get to walk every day, he started to settle down and now he is wonderful on a lead.

Tricie had what the doctor thinks was a cerebral hemorrhage and died at age two. I was devastated. I went to the Licking County Humane Society and got a friend for Huey, and a week later I picked up another friend for Huey at the Fairfield County Dog Shelter. All three dogs get along very well.

About the time I got the other dogs, a little boy was riding his bicycle and Huey jumped the fence to go after the boy. Huey gets so upset when a bicycle, a horse and carriage, or a car goes down the alley. I love this dog so much and he is so precious to me that I immediately started calling fence companies. I ended up paying $1500 to have a 5-foot fence installed. I know this was a lot of money, but it has given me such peace of mind to know that Huey cannot go over it. I am very thankful to the Knox County Humane Society that I was able to get Huey. He is one of the three most precious creatures in my life.
