George the cat

Dear Friends,

Enclosed is a picture of our cat, George (a.k.a. Binx) with his best friend Ozzy James II, our pug. We adopted George on June 22, 2003 from the Knox County Humane Society. We were looking for an older cat. George was almost two when we got him. When we went into the shelter, my husband was bent down, looking at a beautiful gray and white cat sitting on the floor. There was a shelf behind him on which sat this black cat. As my husband stood up, the black cat patted him on the shoulder. My husband turned around and petted the black cat, and turned back around once again to look at the gray cat. The black cat patted him on the shoulder once again. This impressed us so much that we ended up bringing the black cat home. We felt that George really is the one who chose us.

He has been the most awesome cat. He loves to sleep in drawers, closets, and on top of the washing machine. He grooms himself as well as his friend Ozzy, the pug. They romp through the house and if George can_t find Ozzy, he will walk around and cry. George, we discovered, is not all that fond of children. He tolerates the grandkids, but runs and hides if he sees them coming. He would rather be left alone to do his own thing. He likes to be petted if it is his idea.

We tried to make George an indoor cat. He would not hear of it. He will cry and scratch at the windows to go outside. He will go and roam around for a few hours and then come back in to take a nap. He loves to sleep on top of the dog crate. Sometimes he will crawl inside the crate with Ozzy.

One day he did not return home. We went around the neighborhood, asking if anyone saw a black cat. I called the Humane Society to see if anyone had brought him in. They were very helpful but George was not there. Two days later, George came strolling up onto the deck. A neighbor told us he had gotten locked up in his garage. George is very nosy and I sometimes fear he will let his curiosity get the best of him. George is very good at opening doors. He has figured out how to turn the knobs and let himself in or out. We have to keep the doors locked or chained. He is very smart and we love him to pieces.

I would recommend to everyone to adopt a cat from the shelter. They are neutered or spayed, and in great health. An older cat usually has great manners and is litter trained. We love our cat and hope to have him for many years.
